#MODERNCREATIVE Sydney photographer Steve Baccon has been working with Hayden for years. They first met on an assignment for Stab Magazine in the some of the earlier days of Haydenshapes and have since formed a friendship and teamed up on a number of different projects.
Their most recent shoot together landed in conjunction with a project between Haydenshapes and Audi. Hayden had the idea to wrap an Audi TT in his signature Haydenshapes marble ‘Fracture’ print and shoot it along side the matching wrapped Hypto Krypto. The idea behind this concept was to capture the design aspect of both ‘high performance products’, with minimal colour and background texture… To capture and do a project like this justice, it takes more than the ability of knowing how to work a camera, it takes a certain creative eye. The photography industry is now more competitive than ever and out of curiosity, we dug a little deeper and got a personal perspective on the subject and what it’s like to be a talented working photographer.
What landed you in the business of Photography?
I am an art school drop out! I began my career as a newspaper photographer back in 1989, covering all types of events along the way before settling into the magazine area.
How long have you been in the business?
26 years….and still love it!
In a sentence, how would you describe your creative style?
Relaxed and authentic…
What makes a great photograph?
A great photograph in my opinion is timeless and would still blow minds in 50 years.
In terms of projects, what industries appeal to you most and why?
I really enjoy working with people and I work with all sorts – kids, surfers, models, animals….food! I had to chose I’d say ‘Life Style’ but I hope I can continue mixing it up. They all influence each other.
A lesson you’ve learned?
You are only as good as your last job/shot…never get complacent.
You have shot a number of high profile portraits that include the likes of Dave Grohl, Geoffrey Rush, Cindy Crawford to name just a few. Is there anyone that tops your list?
They are all interesting! Everyone has a good side.
We know that surfing is a big part of your lifestyle. What are you currently riding?
I am on a Hypto Quad Fin…it is lightning fast.
What were you aiming to achieve with the Haydenshapes X Audi marble shoot?
I wanted to make both the board and the car as luxe as possible and compliment each other. Both are pieces of great industrial design.
When it comes to brands you work with, what attracts you most? Are you selective with your projects?
I work with a lot of brands, but the two that I really love working with are BILLABONG Womens and DEPACTUS. They have great creative teams to work with and it feels relaxed enough to get authentic results. Also, a great online magazine called Captain and the Gypsy Kid. The creator, Sheree Commerford has got the style aspect down to the perfect levels… lots to work with.
Do you have anything exciting coming up?
Sure do but can’t give them away just yet…
